WILSONVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A man convicted of murdering another man at an Interstate 5 rest stop near Wilsonville was sentenced to life in prison with parole possible after 25 years.

A jury convicted Michael-Daniel Timothy Stepina of murder Tuesday. He was then sentenced to prison.

The case began in October 2015 when emergency crews responded to the French Prairie Rest Area off southbound I-5 near Milepost 282.

Timothy Way, 55, of Beavercreek, was found suffering from traumatic injuries. Medics attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stepina was initially identified by police as a person of interest before he was arrested the following day and booked into the Clackamas County Jail.

Stepina told investigators Way picked him up and offered to give him a shower and a meal, according to court documents. A probable cause affidavit states Stepina claimed he was then sexually assaulted by Way, so he grabbed scissors and stabbed Way to death at the rest stop.

The scissors were found near Way's body and a design was written on his chest in toothpaste, according to court documents.

Stepina was found about a mile away with blood on his skin and clothing.

Stepina was ordered to serve a lifetime of post-prison supervision is he ever receives parole.
