One man is in custody after he allegedly broke into multiple homes, armed with a handgun, and stole several cars in Southeast Portland Wednesday morning.

The Portland Police Bureau said they responded to a report of an armed robbery at a home in the 2600 block of Southeast 52nd Avenue around 12:19 a.m.

The suspect, 38-year-old Ryan Scott Davis, allegedly broke into the home and stole the victim’s cell phone and car, a gray 2004 Mazda RX8.

Officers said they immediately began searching the scene for the stolen vehicle.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. officers received another report of an armed robbery and stolen car at a home in the 2000 block of Southeast 51st Avenue.

Believed to be the same suspect, PPB officials began looking for the second stolen car, a black 2014 Ford Focus.

Officers said they located the Ford Focus abandoned nearby. The other vehicle was also found in the neighborhood.

Around 4 a.m. the Special Emergency Reaction Team located the Davis in a shed in the 4700 block of Southeast Franklin Street.

The owner of the shed Patrick McDonagh said the Davis broke down the door to his basement and ran through his home before eventually barricading himself in the backyard shed.

"He didn't take anything. My wallet was sitting there. My keys were sitting there," said McDonagh. "He was just looking for somewhere to hide I guess and when he saw the police out there, he ran back out and in the shed."

After ignoring demands to surrender, the SERT team deployed a non-lethal chemical agent into the shed. Davis surrendered about 20 minutes later.

He was arrested on charges of burglary, robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
