A lost hiker is back with his family after spending the majority of the night lost in the Columbia River Gorge.

Multnomah County search and rescue teams said 58-year-old William Maurer of Makawao, Hawaii had lost his way on the Oneonta/Horsetail Falls loop after starting his hike around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Maurer told rescuers that he had been hiking with his spouse and had come across a wash on the trail before he took a wrong turn and lost his way.

Maurer was able to get a signal on his cell phone to a friend at some point along the trail, saying that he was lost. His friend then called 911.

Multnomah County deputies responded to the incident. According to officials, Maurer continued to gradually descend from the area because of a sore knee.

Once he arrived at the Bull Run watershed, Maurer was able to send out another text, which allowed rescuers to pinpoint his location.

Maurer was rescued around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. MCSO said he did not have any food, water, a flashlight or emergency supplies with him.

The MCSO would like to remind hikers to be prepared with extra supplies while hiking.
