NEW YORK (KPTV/AP) -

A Trump Organization staff writer says she made a "mistake" in including passages from a Michelle Obama speech in Melania Trump's convention speech.

Meredith McIver said she was working with Trump on the speech when Mrs. Trump said a person she always like was Obama, and read some of the passages from Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention as an example.

McIver said she did not check Obama’s previous speeches, adding that the similarities in the final speech were her mistake and that she felt “terrible for the chaos I have caused for Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama.”

The speechwriter said she offered her resignation Tuesday, but it was rejected by Donald Trump. McIver said Trump told her “people make innocent mistakes.”

The Trump campaign has denied accusations of plagiarism, saying the similarities were coincidences.
