CORVALLIS, OR (KPTV) -

Streets were closed and people were evacuated in downtown Corvallis due to a hazmat investigation Wednesday afternoon.

A city spokesman said Madison Avenue was shut down between 2nd Street and 3rd Street, including the sidewalks.

First responders also evacuated homes and businesses on the north side of Madison Street, but the city reported it was being done "out of an abundance of caution."

Police said a cleaning crew discovered a vial containing an unknown substance inside a safe in a former jewelry store.

It was apparently left behind after the store went out of business.

Hazmat crews and the Oregon State Police bomb squad were called out to determine if the substance in the vial is a potential health hazard. The scene was cleared by 2:30 p.m. and there were no reports of injuries.

No other information was immediately released about the contents of the vial.
