A Vancouver man is accused of sharing child pornography online.

Mason Herpel, 30, made his first court appearance Friday on multiple counts of first-degree dealing in depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct and first-degree possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The investigation began on June 7. According to court documents, a Vancouver Police Department digital detective connected to a computer with an IP address in Vancouver and downloaded 19 files of "investigative interest" that the computer was making available on a peer-to-peer network.

A probable cause affidavit states at least 10 of the videos showed a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

A search warrant was obtained for the Internet service provider that owned the IP address in question, which led detectives to Herpel's home in Vancouver.

The warrant was served on July 11. Court documents state Herpel lives with his mother and sister and had a computer in his room that he constructed.

Investigators seized the computer and said it contained exact matches for all 19 files downloaded at the start of the investigation, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states information was obtained corroborating the installation of the peer-to-peer client software used to share the videos.

In addition, according to the affidavit, investigators said they recovered 60 more videos of child pornography on the computer.

Court documents state after his arrest Thursday, Herpel admitted using the peer-to-peer client software to download numerous genres of pornography, including child pornography.

Herpel's bail was set at $100,000 and he is due back in court Friday.
