MOSIER, OR (KPTV) -

An oil train derailed last month in Mosier causing an explosion, and causing oil to leak. Now, the Department of Environmental Quality said the groundwater in the town is contaminated.

On June 3, 16 tanker cars full of crude oil derailed from a Union Pacific train releasing 42,000 gallons of oil. Half of it burned off, while the other half seeped into the ground and water.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for DEQ said there is no concern for the drinking water supply right now.

The contamination will require long term monitoring, and there isn't a definitive time for when the contamination might be cleared up, according to DEQ.

DEQ is prepared to keep an eye on the area for up to a year if necessary.
