PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Biketown program launched just two days ago but someone has already vandalized a few of the bikes.

The graffiti appeared sometime in the last 24 hours in southeast Portland, but people who live and work near the bike station don’t think it’s necessarily a commentary on the new program.

The incident happened at the Biketown station at Southeast 7th Avenue and Burnside Street when someone used spray paint and tagged the payment kiosk along with a few of the signature orange bikes.

The bike sharing program, launched by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with bikes designed by Nike, officially kicked off Tuesday with stations all over Portland.

The bright orange bikes certainly draw attention to themselves, but people who live and work in the area said they don’t think the vandalism is in retaliation to the bikes being there.

“I think it just boils down to a few people in this area.  Like you see some – there’s graffiti over there, it’s just kind of everywhere,” resident Dalen Freeman said. “And unfortunately, it’s just another thing for them to scribble on, I feel like.”

Transportation officials said the spray paint was cleaned off of the bikes immediately and none of them were permanently damaged.
