A California man is safe after spending several hours lost on a trail in the Columbia River Gorge Thursday.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue teams said they were dispatched to the Oneonta Trailhead after 42-year-old Donn Cambell lost his way on the trail.

Cambell told rescuers that he had been traveling with his family when they stopped at a scenic area in the gorge.

Cambell decided to go for a short hike while his family went sightseeing around the area.

He started hiking around 2:30 p.m. Cambell said he tried the follow the trail but lost his way along another trail that he thought led up to Larch Mountain.

The MCSO received a call from Cambell’s wife after he called her for help.

Search and rescuers were able to make contact with Cambell and pinpoint his location using his cell phone signal.

Teams told him to stay where he was and they were quickly able to find him and bring him back down around 2:15 a.m. Friday.

Cambell was hungry and thirsty but otherwise okay. He did not have any emergency supplies with him.

The MCSO would like to remind hikers to always take extra supplies when heading out on the trails.
