SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Salem police found a small child wandering down the side of a road early Friday morning and received a call from the boy's parent hours later.

The Salem Police Department said they received reports of a toddler walking alone near the 4700 block of Skyline Road South around 4 a.m.

Police said the 2-year-old boy was wearing only a T-shirt and a pull-up diaper when officers found him.

The child was unable to tell police his name or the name of his mother, but said they lived in an apartment.

Officers drove the boy around the area and spoke to several residents in an attempt to find his parents, but they were unsuccessful.

At 5:30 a.m. a missing child message was sent to over 600 telephones in the area. The child was eventually taken into custody by the Department of Human Services.

At 9:10 a.m. a parent of the child called police to say they woke up to find the front door open and their 2-year-old son missing. By Friday afternoon police said they had completed an investigation into the incident and no criminal charges would be filed in this case.

Police initially identified the child as a girl, but later corrected that information.
