VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man wanted on murder charges in Vancouver was caught on a beach in southern California.

The Vancouver Police Department Major Crimes Unit obtained an arrest warrant for 19-year-old David Johnathan Salgado on July 12.

The former Vancouver man was identified as the suspect in the shooting death of 31-year-old Fernando Cendejas-Pardo in May.

Police responded to an apartment complex on the 4500 block of Nicholson Road early in the morning on May 9. Cendejas-Pardo was found dead and a homicide investigation was launched.

The medical examiner determined Cendejas-Pardo's death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Police, at the time, did not release any suspect information, but stated there was no immediate threat to the public.

Detectives did not release any information about what led to identifying Salgado as the suspect.

Salgado was found by the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Fugitive Task Force at Venice Beach, California on Saturday. Police said he attempted to escape by jumping into the ocean, but he was eventually taken into custody.

Salgado was being held in San Bernardino on Friday pending extradition back to Washington. He is facing the charge of first-degree murder.

A motive for the shooting has not been released.
