PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

TriMet has received a $3.4 million federal grant to purchase the agency's first electric buses.

TriMet will buy four battery-electric buses as part of the Federal Transit Administration Low and No Emission Vehicle Deployment program.

The federal grant covers all of the costs for the New Flyer XE40 Xcelsior 40-foot-long buses, as well as depot and on-route charging infrastructure.

The buses reduce emissions and greenhouse gases, according to TriMet. They are also quieter than regular buses.

TriMet reports the electric buses are expected to be more reliable with the potential to have reduced maintenance and fuel costs.

The new buses are expected to be operational in 2018, deployed first on a test basis to determine whether further expansion of the electric fleet is cost-effective and meets customer service requirements.
