Peace Shelter in SW Portland closes its doors

In the past year, Multnomah County says it has opened more space and beds for the homeless community than anytime in the past 12 years, but there is still not enough room for everyone.

The Peace Shelter in southwest Portland opened as a temporary shelter in January but on Friday it closed its doors.

Stephen Pettefer said he is worried about the people being put out on the streets, especially those receiving drug and alcohol treatment.

Pettefer said many were hoping to get beds at the new Hansen Building shelter but were told they don't qualify.

"It's hard because no one knows where we are going to be. It's hard for anyone with illnesses or health issues. I've seen people in their 70s who are on the street," he said.

Some of those men will be able to go to the Portland Rescue Mission. Its Burnside Shelter is going to emergency winter hours on Friday. That adds nearly 100 more beds where people can spend the night.
