PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

North America's oldest Asian elephant bull explored the South Habitat of Elephant Lands at the Oregon Zoo for the first time.

The zoo said 54-year-old Packy stepped out into the habitat around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to the zoo, Packy spent 12 hours wandering throughout Elephant Lands. He chose to remain outside all night even though he had access to the indoor habitat.

The zoo said the reason for the timing of Packy's first introduction to the South Habitat was based on positive progress with his tuberculosis treatment.

In 2013, Packy tested positive for TB, but hasn't tested positive since. Even though he didn't show any signs of illness and hasn't had anymore positive tests, he is required to complete a 12-month treatment before sharing the same space with the other elephants.
