Salem single mother dies after crash, friends mourn loss

Posted: Updated:

Friends are morning the loss of Shana Lucas, 35, after she died in a head-on-collision in Salem.

“She was on her way to the dojo where she did karate with her kids,” a friend Julie Shinn said.

Shinn said Lucas was a single mother of three children, all under the age of fifteen. Salem Police reports Lucas’s daughter was in a booster seat during the crash. Shinn said the 8-year-old girl is now with Lucas’s friend Kri Imel.

Emergency crews responded to the 1900 block of Silverton Road Northeast at 11:20 a.m Thursday. Investigators said Estaban Alvarez-Ayala, 19, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado on Silverton Road when he crossed into the westbound lane. Officers report his truck hit Lucas’s car where she was pronounced dead at the scene.

After being examined at the hospital, officers arrested Alvarez-Ayala on charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and reckless driving.

“It’s just empty,” Imel said. “I’m trying to be as strong as I can for those kids.”

Imel said Lucas’s teen boys are banded together, to be the best brother for their little sister.

Currently, both Imel and Shinn said they hope to keep Lucas’s children in the same environment and same school. Shinn started a Go Fund Me page to help the children.

The case remains under investigation and the Salem Police Department Traffic Control Unit asks anyone with information to contact them.
