Lawnmower sparks grass fire near Dallas

Posted: Updated:

A lawnmower is being blamed for starting a grass fire that threatened a home near Dallas.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday a homeowner called 911 to report his field was on fire.

Firefighters from Polk County Fire District #1, SW Polk, Fall City, Dallas Fire & EMS, and Oregon Department of Forestry all responded to the home on Zumalt Road.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within an hour.

The first priority for firefighters was to protect the homeowners and their home.

The fire burned approximately 5 acres and caused minor damage to the deck of the home.

Fire officials say the fire started while the homeowner was mowing the grass around his home.

Two people who live in the immediate area were evacuated and have since been allowed to return home.

Dallas Fire & EMS say the Willamette Valley is in middle of fire season, and want to remind people to create defensible space around their homes.
