Cyclists enjoy this month's Sunday Parkways in NE Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portlanders hopped on their bikes and enjoyed this month's Sunday Parkways in Northeast Portland.

Cyclists enjoyed a nearly eight-mile car-free route from Woodlawn Park to Khunamokwst Park.

Dozens of riders also used the new BIKETOWN bikes. The collaboration between the Bureau of Transportation and Nike launched on Tuesday.

Riders were able to rent the bikes and take them anywhere in the city.

One woman visiting from Hawaii said it was a great way to be able to participate in Sunday Parkways with her Portland family.

"As a tourist it's really nice, and also just for commuting from one part of the town to the other and knowing that there's stations in one part of the town and being able to drop it off in another part, because sometimes you don't want to have to deal with having a car."

Riders were also enjoying the beautiful weather, making sure to cool down with frozen treats as they took a break from biking.

Sunday Parkways started three years ago as a way to encourage people to ride their bikes around the community.

One Sunday a month, all summer long, streets are shut down to motorists in a different Portland neighborhood.
