PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 37-year-old man and a 7-year-old child shined laser pointers at a Portland Police Bureau airplane in separate incidents Saturday night.

The Air Support Unit was flying patrol support in southeast Portland at 9:52 p.m. when the first laser strike occurred.

Officers were able to determine that the laser originated in the area of Southeast 162nd Avenue and Stark Street.

Gresham officers responded and found the suspect, 37-year-old David Martinez. A laser pointer was seized as evidence and Martinez was arrested on charges of unlawful directing of light from a laser pointer and recklessly endangering another person.

Martinez is also being charged with violating his parole.

While officers were addressing that incident, the plane was hit by another laser strike.

The second laser pointer was determined to be in the area of Southeast 84th Avenue and Stark Street.

Officers responded to that location and determined a 7-year-old playing with a laser pointer was responsible.

Officers contacted the child's mother, gave her the laser pointer and explained the dangers of pointing a laser at an aircraft.
