PHILADELPHIA (KPTV) -

Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, and Fox 12 spoke with her right after she finished her speech.

Kotek said it was her first time at the DNC and said it was an honor to be able to share her message with the country.

"As the first lesbian speaker of any state house in our nation, cheers. I have personally witnessed the tremendous progress and justice for the LGBTQ community," Kotek said at the DNC.

Kotek said she believes Hillary Clinton will continue to take America in the right direction when it comes to equal rights, minimum wage, and medical coverage, and said simply, "I'm with Hillary, because she is with me."

Under a Donald Trump organization, Kotek said she fears we will go backwards.

Fox 12 spoke with Kotek shortly after she gave her speech and asked about the conventions rocky start.

Over the weekend thousands of private DNC emails were leaked, raising questions about whether Democratic party leaders actively supported Clinton's campaign during the primary season instead of staying neutral.

Now, outgoing DNC Chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down.

"I do think with Wasserman Schultz stepping down, it has done a lot to unify the party, and the Bernie and Hillary people from Oregon are working together and now we have to get behind one candidate, and by the end we will unify the party," said Kotek.

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley also spoke at the DNC. He took the floor just before 5 p.m. and took a big focus on creating jobs. Merkley had some strong words for Trump, saying Trump is no more a champion for workers than a lion is for a gazelle.

Sen. Merkley also gave a call for unity between Sanders and Clinton supporters to help push the workforce forward long after the election.
