Dress code, $750 million bond discussed at PPS board meeting

Posted: Updated:

Two important topics were discussed at Monday's Portland Public Schools board meeting: the dress code policy and a hefty bond for school improvements.

A bond committee brought a $750 million bond project to the school board. It would cover health and safety issues, and modernize four schools.

However, the board voted to bring the bond package to voters next May, saying it will allow them to make sure the bond package is tightly focused and will let them focus on finding stable leadership for the district in the meantime.

Also discussed at the meeting was the dress code.

The board voted to pass the new policies, bringing more relaxed clothing guidelines for students.

The new dress code is gender neutral and will allow kids to dress how they want as long as essential parts are covered, and their clothes will not be able to promote violence or show drugs, alcohol, or vulgar language.
