A man who crashed a stolen car and fired a shot as an officer gave chase was arrested after breaking into a relative's home in Salem, according to police.

The incident began when a Salem officer spotted a stolen 1995 Honda Accord near Lancaster Drive Northeast and Beverly Avenue Northeast at 3:23 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the driver sped away, ran over a landscaping rock in the front yard of a home at Beverly Avenue and Phipps Lane Northeast and became high-centered in the roadway.

The suspect got out and ran away toward McKay Park, according to police. The officer spotted a handgun in the suspect's hand and heard a gunshot.

The officer, Cpl. Mike Baskett, took appropriate precautionary measures as he alerted other units about the situation, according to the Salem Police Department.

Marion County deputies and Keizer officers responded to assist at the scene.

Police then received a call that someone had broken into a relative's home on the 2600 block of Phipps Lane Northeast.

The people in the home were able to get out with the suspect still inside. Officers surrounded the home and after 20 minutes the suspect came out and was taken into custody.

Carlos Francisco Calzadillas Jr., 27, of Salem, was arrested on charges including burglary, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said they recovered a gun from the yard next to the home where Calzadillas was arrested.

Calzadillas had warrants on charges of parole violation, failure to appear and third-degree theft.
