Search for missing swimmer on Columbia River now a recovery effort

Posted: Updated:

A search for a missing swimmer on the Columbia River is now a recovery effort.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, river patrol deputies responded to a report of a missing swimmer off the north side of Ackerman Island just before 9 p.m.

Preliminary reports indicate the swimmer, a man in his 50s, was on the island with family members. He was attempting to retrieve their boat which had somehow become unanchored from shore on Ackerman Island and drifted out. According to reports, the man swam back and forth to the boat several times before disappearing from view.

Late Wednesday, the search was deemed a recovery effort after investigators confirmed they believe the man has drowned. Crews will be back Thursday morning with a dive team to recover his body.

Rescue boats from Vancouver Fire, Gresham Fire and Portland Fire as well as a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter assisted in the search.
