COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR (KPTV) -

Divers and search and rescue teams from several local agencies will resume their recovery effort Thursday morning for a man who disappeared while swimming in the Columbia River Wednesday.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said the man in his 50s was with his family on Ackerman Island.

Around 9 p.m. the man jumped into the water to retrieve his family’s boat that had become unanchored from the shore.

According to family members, the man swam back and forth from the boat several times, but then disappeared from sight.

MCSO River Patrol, Vancouver Fire, Gresham Fire, Portland Fire & Rescue, and the U.S. Coast Guard were called in to assist in the search. Crews were unable find the man and suspended the search around 11 p.m.

Officials said the search will resume around 9:30 a.m. Teams are now treating the situation as a recovery operation.

Officials have not released the name of the swimmer.
