Police want to talk to anyone who witnessed a crash that killed a 35-year-old woman, injured her 9-year-old daughter and led to the arrest of a reckless driving suspect.
Shana Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car crash on the 1900 block of Silverton Road Northeast at 11:20 a.m. July 21.
Investigators said an eastbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 19-year-old Estaban Alvarez-Ayala crossed the centerline and struck a 1999 Acura Integra driven by Lucas.
Lucas' daughter was in a booster seat in the back of the car. She was taken to the hospital, but survived the crash.
Friends said Lucas was a single mother of three children, all under the age of 15 years old.
Alvarez-Ayala was arrested on charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and reckless driving.
As officers continued their investigation, surveillance footage showed a considerable number of other vehicles in the area at the time of the crash. Officers would like to talk to anyone who was in that area and may have seen either of the involved vehicles leading up to the crash.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 503-588-6123.
