YACHATS, OR (KPTV) -

Family members cleaning out the home of a person who recently died discovered what they thought were illegal fireworks, but deputies said they were actually explosives used to make rockets.

The family reported the discovery at 11:37 a.m. Thursday.

The Yachats Fire Department first responded to the scene and then requested the assistance of the Oregon State Police explosives unit.

A 300-foot diameter area around the home was evacuated. The Oregon Department of Transportation stood by to close Highway 101, but a closure was determined not to be necessary.

The bomb squad arrived and seized and destroyed the explosive substances.

The small amount of explosives had been stored in unmarked containers. Investigators said they were consistent with the recreational, but unlawful, building of small rockets.
