Hood to Coast increasing security along Springwater Trail

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Hood to Coast relay is less than a month away, and organizers are stepping up security this year around the Springwater Trail.

The relay race starts at Timberline Lodge and goes to Seaside, passing through Portland.

Organizers say safety is always a top priority with the race. This year they plan to have bike patrols and security officers on hand on the Springwater Trail where hundreds of homeless campers are living.

Some people who spoke with FOX 12 Friday think the added measures are a good idea for runners' safety.

"I just saw a dude with a huge machete,” cyclist Evan Balbier said. “I had to literally go around because there are people dealing drugs, taking up the whole sidewalk."

Others like cyclist Alan Bennett aren't sure security officers are needed.

"I just know where they're at and I don't bother them, they don't bother me and that's perfectly fine," he countered.

The Hood to Coast relay takes place on august 26 and 27.
