The Perseid meteor shower happens every summer, but stargazers can expect to see even more shooting stars than usual this time around.

According to Space.com, the meteor shower is producing an “outburst” of meteors in 2016.

That means stargazers will be able to see double the typical number of meteors during the shower’s peak in August, with as many as 150 or 200 shooting stars per hour.

The last time the Perseid shower had an outburst like this one was in 2009.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of Friday, August 12 but lasts for most of the month of August.

With the full moon occurring on August 18, the best conditions for viewing the meteor shower will likely be earlier in the month, when a dimmer moon will make for darker skies.

Stargazers should be able to see meteors any time after dark, but the hours between midnight and dawn usually provide the best viewing opportunities.

The Perseid meteor shower is so named because the meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Perseus.

Shooting stars are the result of the earth passing through the debris field left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle. As those particles hit Earth’s atmosphere they burn up, creating bright streaks in the night sky.

Head over to Space.com for more detailed information on the Perseid meteor shower.
