PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Fire and Rescue responded to what they thought was a grass fire near Northeast 8th Avenue and Northeast Fremont late Saturday night.

When crews arrived just before midnight, they found a tree on fire and a downed power line.

The fire damaged the adjacent commercial structure’s gas meter, which caused the meter to rupture and the leaking gas to ignite.

Fortunately, Portland Fire and Rescue said the building in the area was cinder-block construction.

The building was able to hold up under the hot conditions until crews could get the gas shut off and the fire extinguished.

Firefighters checked the building’s roof and neighboring yards to make sure the tree fire did not cause other fires.

No injuries were reported. An investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire.
