A man and woman are facing murder charges after police said they shot a man in a car and then stole his wallet, phone and handgun.

Emergency crews responded to Highway 199 near Cave Junction on Wednesday morning.

A person in the area reported hearing what he thought was a car crash around 1:45 a.m.

Police arrived to find a car that drifted off the road and hit a tree. The driver, William Roberts, 39, of Cave Junction, had a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

An extensive investigation led police to identify two suspects as Renee Lee Edrington, 39, and Kyle James Forester, 29, both of Cave Junction.

The couple lives on a large piece of property on the 22000 block of Redwood Highway.

At 4:45 a.m. Saturday, the Oregon State Police SWAT team served a search warrant at the home. Police said Edrington was outside with a handgun and refused to comply with commands from officers while advancing toward them.

Troopers used less lethal impact rounds to take Edrington into custody. Forester came out of the home and was arrested without incident.

Investigators said Forester and Edrington were in some sort of confrontation with Roberts on Wednesday. Forester and Edrington were then in a car following Roberts's car when they shot him, according to police.

Detectives believe they returned to the crash scene and stole items from Roberts.

Forester and Edrington were booked into the Josephine County Jail on charges of murder, robbery and theft.
