RIDGEFIELD, WA (KPTV) -

A cyclist was hit and killed while riding along I-5 near Ridgefield early Monday.

Washington State Patrol said the crash took place on southbound I-5 near milepost 11 around 3 a.m.

Troopers said the cyclist, a black man in his late teens or 20s, was riding in the far left lane when he was struck by a car. He was not wearing a helmet.

WSP said it appears that the driver simply could not see the biker in the darkness.

The driver, a 20-year-old Luke Gill of Vancouver, did not immediately stop but continued to drive and took the next exit. Officials said he was searching for a gas station so he could call for help because his cell phone was dead.

The nearest gas station was closed and Gill got back into his car and continued to search for a place to call 911.

A Clark County deputy saw the damaged car and stopped Gill. He is cooperating with officials.

The left and center lanes were closed while police investigated the incident. All lanes are back open.

WSP have not released the names of those involved. They added that it is illegal to bike along interstate highways.
