Search continues for hiker missing in Jefferson Wilderness

DETROIT, OR (KPTV) -

Crews resumed their search Monday for a 21-year-old hiker who went missing in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness area.

Riley Zickel of Portland arrived at the park Wednesday and initially planned to stay one night there and possibly summit Mount Jefferson.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Zickel is an experienced climber and had appropriate equipment for his trip and enough food and supplies to last four days.

Crews searched by ground and air Sunday, starting back up again Monday morning. In total, 68 searchers from six counties and five other agencies are in the Detroit area looking for Zickel.

Local residents like Cathy Snyder said it is easy for someone who is inexperienced to get turned around in the backcountry, especially on their time hiking the mountain.

"If he is experienced and he’s got gear, he should be good to go unless something has happened," the Detroit resident said. “You know I hope he is found really soon, you know it’s scary for families and people who know him.”

The hiker's father, Robin Zickel, said his son is an avid outdoorsman who likes to push the limit.

Searchers will continue looking for Riley Zickel Monday until nightfall and resume the search 7 a.m. Tuesday. Crews ask that anyone with information on Zickel’s location please call 503-588-5032.
