PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Neighbors have long complained about the Springwater Trail camp, saying it has led to decrease in property values and an increase in crime.

Police say, though, that at least one crime connected to the trail has been solved.

Over the weekend, FOX 12 rode along with the Bike Theft Task Force on a tour through the camp. Within minutes, officers say they found a stolen bike.

A camper told officers he paid $40 for it, but police say it was worth $1,000.

Officers impounded the bike and found the owner by tracing the serial number, and the owner was able to retrieve the bike on Monday.

"It's probably the funnest [sic] part of the job," Officer David Sanders said. "Seeing the joys of somebody getting their bike back that they thought they'd never see again."

Officer Sanders added that the single best way to keep your bike from getting stolen is recording the serial number and description online.

The PPB partners with the sites like BikeIndex.org and can often return stolen property to the rightful owners.

Officers say some of the campers along the trail are part of a black market industry, stripping down bikes for their parts, adding that about $4 million in bikes and bike parts are stolen each year in Portland.

Portland police are asking for the public's help finding the owner of another stolen bike that was recovered.

Officers with the task force say they recently recovered the bike in the Old Town area and they posted a picture of it on Twitter.

They’re asking anyone who is familiar with the bike to contact them.
