Salem woman recalls terrifying bedroom intrusion

Posted: Updated:

A Salem woman said she awoke to her "worst nightmare come true” when realized a strange man was standing above her bed Saturday

Kathy Mateer, 68, told Fox 12 it was when the man began pulling the pillow out from under her head that she woke up.

“I thought he was going to hurt me,” Mateer said, adding that she then started screaming and the man jumped over her bed and ran out her back door.

She then ran from her unit of Fairmount Park Apartments to her next-door neighbor to call 911.

According to court documents, Salem Police were able to find the suspect, 20-year-old Timothy Desjarlais, hiding about a block away.

Police said he was hiding behind a tree and matched the description that Mateer provided officers. Investigators said they later asked Mateer to identify Desjarlais, who was standing outside of a patrol car.

According to the documents, Mateer said, “I’m 100 percent positive that’s the guy.”

Mateer said her house was ransacked and she believes Desjarlais must have been riffling through drawers and cupboards before going into her bedroom. She believes he may have came inside through an unlocked back door.

Desjarlais was charged with burglary in the first degree. He was also charged with three counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, after police said three cars in the complex were found with open doors and scattered contents.

Court documents also said Desjarlais stole Mateer’s phone and they found it behind the tree where he’d been hiding after they called it.

“I’m very shaken up,” Mateer said.

Other neighbors said they were disturbed by the alleged crime.

“[It’s] really creepy to just have someone standing over you that you don’t know just moving your pillows around,” said neighbor Rosemary Lake. “It could have been anyone in these apartments.”

Desjarlais was arraigned on the burglary charge Monday.

It’s not the first time he’s been accused for theft.

In February, he was charged on crimes related to stealing property from a car. Four days later he was arrested on charges of third degree theft for allegedly stealing from a Kohl’s.
