SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem husband and father was killed in a marijuana robbery gone wrong Monday night, according to deputies, and now the two suspects in the case have been identified.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the suspects are Denzel Hawthorne, 22, of Michigan, and Eloy Carrera Jr., 20, of Illinois. Both are facing charges of murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary.

They were arrested at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in Woodburn – some 15 miles from the crime scene – at the Budget Inn on North Pacific Highway where the Marion County SWAT team served a search warrant.

Investigators said Hawthorne and Carrera Jr. went to a home on Jean Street Northeast on Monday night to steal marijuana from 20-year-old Will White.

White’s girlfriend told FOX 12 off-camera that White wasn’t home at the time, but his parents were. When one or both of the suspects started beating up his mother, his father tried to intervene. When Brett White, 44, grabbed the gun he was shot in the head.

He later died.

White’s girlfriend also said White came home at one point during the chaos and his mother told him to run and call for help. He did, but was later arrested on an unrelated warrant.

In court Tuesday, Will White told his lawyer his girlfriend is 37 weeks pregnant and his father was just murdered. His attorney relayed that information to the judge.

“I’m sorry to hear about your dad, Mr. White. That’s got to be a difficult thing for you,” the judge said.

Will White’s girlfriend said she lived at the home with him and his parents. The home was taped off for some 12 hours as investigators processed the scene, spoke with witnesses and gathered evidence.

“We’re sad about it and our prayers go out to the family. I think that we feel rattled by the whole thing,” said neighbor Adrienne Wicker. “It seems like a stupid thing to have happened over marijuana in the first place.”

Investigators have not released what connection – if any – exists between Will White and the suspects.

Hawthorne and Carrera Jr. are expected to face a judge at the Marion County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon.
