A man who shot and killed his roommate during a fight in their Salem home has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Nicholas Anthony Ransom, 35, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm last month.

The investigation began in July 2015 when police responded to the 2600 block of Islander Avenue Northwest.

The body of 30-year-old Matthew Pearce was discovered in the home.

Court documents state Ransom told police he got into a fight with Pearce after Pearce announced there would be new sleeping arrangements in the home.

Ransom claimed Pearce was "pummeling" him for upward of 20 minutes before he broke free long enough to grab a gun.

Investigators said Ransom's injuries were not consistent with the beating he described and statements from witnesses refuted his description of what took place, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states detectives reviewed a 911 call from the home and a series of gunshots in rapid succession could be heard, which was also not consistent with Ransom's description of the shooting.

Ransom told detectives that Pearce had a "crazy look in his eyes" and he had "no choice but to use deadly force."

As part of a plea agreement, charges of murder, first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon against Ransom were dismissed.

Ransom was sentenced to 7 ½ years in prison Tuesday.
