PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Timbers are looking into an expansion of Providence Park that could add 3,500 seats.

A Timbers spokesman confirmed a report by The Oregonian that the club is looking at an expansion to help meet the demand for tickets, which includes a season ticket waiting list of 13,000 people.

The stadium currently packs in more than 21,000 people for Timbers matches, while also drawing large crowds for the Portland Thorns.

Details about where the seats would be added were not released, but the team is working with a firm on the plans.

The Timbers previously explored the possibility of adding 2,000 seats to the south end of the field, but management said they have moved on from that plan.

Timbers President of Business Mike Golub told The Oregonian that construction on any approved expansion would not likely begin until at least after the 2018 season.
