Overnight apartment blaze started as grass fire

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland firefighters are still looking for the cause of a late night fire in southeast Portland that started in some grass and trees and spread to an apartment building.

The blaze happened at the Hilltop Brownstones in the 2700 block of Southeast 87th Avenue just before midnight.

The incident was first reported as a grass fire and it also burned a line of trees before jumping to the apartment just feet away.

The residents in the apartment were able to get out without any injuries.

The fire spread to two floors and an attic area in the apartment, which also sustained a lot of water damage from firefighters’ efforts to stop the fire, leaving it no longer inhabitable.

Fire crews said the incident should serve as a reminder to be very careful during the hot, dry summer months. Fires in trees and grass often start with a tossed cigarette or an outdoor fire that wasn’t correctly extinguished.
