Hiker dies after 70-foot fall on Eagle Creek Trail

MOUNT HOOD COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A 20-year-old hiker from New York died Tuesday after falling into Punchbowl Falls on the Eagle Creek Trail west of Cascade Locks.

According to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office, Francesco Goncalves of Eastchester, New York, was hiking with a group of friends on the trail.

Witnesses told deputies Goncalves fell from around 70 feet above the waterfall, and that he was still underwater when they reached him.

Rescue crews from the sheriff’s office, American Medical Response and the Hood River Crag Rats responded to the accident, reaching the scene around 7:40 p.m. and confirming the hiker’s death.

The sheriff’s office, along with the Hood River County District Attorney’s office and the county medical examiner, will continue the investigation.
