Nike unveils ‘heroic’ designs for Rio Olympics

Posted: Updated:

Nike designers at the Oregon campus talk to MORE about the inspiration behind their Medal-Stand Uniforms.

All US and Brazilian athletes across 42 sports will wear the same uniforms on the podium. Team USA will sport the classic red, white and blue colors with a modern twist. The blue will range from the darkest to the brightest hue.

Concept Director for the Olympics, Michelle Miller, says stretch knit fabric reveals flashes of red when athletes move. The goal, is to make athletes feel like super heroes.

“People don’t necessarily think about the psychological aspect of putting on your uniform. We know through studies when athletes feel powerful they perform better. So what we think about in designing these is allowing athletes to get in the zone and have that super hero feel,” she said.

Nike also innovated the US basketball, soccer and Track and Field Uniforms.
