HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

A man at the Brookwood Library in Hillsboro heard a woman yell, "My baby is dying."

The man rushed over, placed the 5-month-old infant on the trunk of the family's car and began CPR.

Nathaniel Davis was honored at Tuesday's Hillsboro City Council meeting by the Hillsboro Fire Department for saving the girl's life.

Davis had just finished an appointment on July 1 at the Brookwood Library, where he provides job coaching to employees, when he saw the woman panicking in the parking lot.

The woman had called 911 and Davis took her phone and informed the emergency dispatcher that he was beginning CPR on the baby.

Davis administered chest compressions and rescue breaths until emergency responders arrived to take over.

Firefighters said the baby girl was suffering a cardiac event. She was taken to the hospital for further care.

"I encourage all parents to become CPR trained," said Davis. "I am glad that I was able to recall the appropriate steps for CPR and respond appropriately. I am so glad that I was in the right place at the right time, and that this little girl was OK."

Firefighters hope what Davis did will inspire others to learn CPR.

"We are fortunate to have community members like Nathaniel Davis who not only are willing to help during a life-or-death emergency, but who prepare themselves for that possibility by learning how to perform CPR," said Division Chief Scott Magers of the Hillsboro Fire Department. "If anyone hears Mr. Davis' story and is inspired to learn CPR, we can help direct you to a training class."
