LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Humane Society seized 10 cats and removed the bodies of 18 dead cats from a home in Lake Oswego.

Oregon Humane Society workers served a search warrant, with the assistance of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, at the property on Southwest Jean Road on Wednesday.

The case began last week when deputies referred a suspected animal neglect complaint to the Humane Society.

Investigators said they learned there were a number of cats not receiving minimum care at the home, with the possibility of dead cats on the property.

Wearing protective suits and respirators, a rescue team cleared a path through trash, debris and waste to reach the animals Wednesday, according to the Oregon Humane Society.

Dead cats were found in four different areas of the home, according to investigators.

Rescue crews said the area surrounding the single-family home was almost impassable due to large amounts of trash, which along with overgrown brush made the home difficult to see from the road.

The Humane Society reported that many of the living cats were emaciated, dehydrated and infested with fleas.

They were taken into protective custody and will be given medical care. They are not available for adoption at this time, pending the outcome of the case.

The Humane Society said the person living in the home, who has not been named, is under investigation for animal neglect.

Neighbors said they often saw cats roaming the property, but did not know how extreme the situation was.

“I’m sort of heartbroken because for lack of a better term I consider them my friends, the cats, and it’s hard to think of the ones that  were gone,” neighbor Curtis Calonder said.
