WOODBURN, OR (KPTV) -

Police in Woodburn arrested a man suspected of attempting to use an ax on the back door of a home Wednesday.

Officers responded to the 200 block of West Hayes Street after residents called 911.

The suspect fled the scene while one of the residents followed him in his vehicle to Settlemier Park on Oak Street.

According to police, the suspect swung the ax toward the resident, who was still in his vehicle, as officers arrived.

Officers said the suspect then threw the ax into a trash can and surrendered without incident.

Police identified the suspect as German Perez-Hernandez, 32. He was transported to the Marion County Jail and faces charges of menacing, criminal mischief and trespassing.
