Hood to Coast Relay organizers are changing the race route to keep runners off the Springwater Corridor from Southeast 122nd Avenue to Southeast 82nd Avenue.
Hood to Coast organizers posted the amended route for leg 11 on its website, saying the decision was made, "In order to maintain the highest level of safety."
Numerous homeless camps line the Springwater Corridor. The city of Portland is planning to clear the camps starting Sept. 1, after initially announcing plans to begin the clearing process on Aug. 1.
The delay was due to social service providers and homeless advocates seeking more time to relocate the campers.
Hood to Coast is Aug. 26-27 and features more than 1,000 teams of 12 runners.
Event organizers said the route change affects the overall mileage of the race, the course ratings and leg directions. Details are reflected in the updated online handbook.
"After spending countless hours on the trail ourselves, we feel that our amended route and additional security measures will provide for a safe, and fun, 2016 race course," according to the Hood to Coast website.
