ALBANY, OR (KPTV) -

Police working to enforce unlawful camping regulations near Simpson Park discovered two tunnels that appear to have been used as underground homeless camps.

One of the tunnels has a hallway that extends from the entrance to a sleeping area.

The tunnels were first discovered in mid-June, and people have been found in them during regular checks by police.

Officers said inside the tunnels they have found furniture stolen from nearby homes. Cutouts have also been made in the walls for candles.

They are high and deep enough for most anyone to walk through comfortably.

"I'm 6'2", it's quite above my head," said Lt. Alan Lynn with the Albany Police Department. "It's built directly under a tree and they've actually cut out the root system of the tree, successfully killing the tree."

The city will work with a contract crew to have the tree cut down and the tunnels demolished next week. Due to the extensive nature of the tunnels, police said it will likely cost several thousand dollars to rehabilitate the embankment.

The case against one person has been forwarded to the Linn County District Attorney's Office for felony criminal mischief charges in connection with the tunnels.
