PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland-based airline is facing a $500,000 fine for allegedly using airplanes that were not airworthy.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing the penalty against SeaPort Airlines, saying the airline operated three single-engine Cessna Caravans when they were not airworthy.

The FAA alleges the airline failed to perform initial and recurring inspections of the turbine compressor blades on three single-engine Cessnas.

The FAA said the company used the three planes on a total of 583 flights when the inspections were overdue.

SeaPort Airlines President Tim Sieber said it discovered the issue in 2014 and reported it to the FAA. Sieber said the company has since changed maintenance management.
