MORE takes to the skies with Breitling Jet Team

Posted: Updated:

For a once in a lifetime experience, MORE’s Jenica Villamor took the skies with the Breitling Jet Team Thursday.

The Breitling pilots, based out of France, are part of the only professional civilian flight team in the world. They will be making their first appearance at the Oregon International Air Show.

The team of seven pilots fly L-39 Albatros jets, an aircraft that was designed to train fighter pilots.

Although they are technically considered civilians, Breitling pilots like Christophe “Dukey” Deketelaere said they need many years of training and experience to do what they do.

“It's a lot of training,” Deketelaere said. “I was a wingman for a fighter pilot in the French Air Force. So we spent about 20 years in the Air Force.”

The team flies all over the world, performing acrobatic and high-flying demonstrations for spectators.

The ultimate goal is perfection, according to Deketelaere. He and his team are constantly striving to be better.

“As we fly seven planes together, for us it's never perfect,” he said. “Maybe one time you are one meter too far or too close. Spectators can't see that, but for us it's always a motivation to be more precise each day.”

The Breitling Jet Team will be making multiple appearances at the Oregon International Air Show at the Hillsboro Airport, August 5 through August 7. Learn more at
