NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -

The day after a fire at the City Center Motel in Newport claimed the lives of four people, investigators are still combing through the debris looking for what started the blaze.

The fire started around 5:45 a.m. Friday and police said they discovered two victims, a man and a woman, at 4:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. officers said two more unidentified bodies had been discovered.

Saturday, fire officials said that they know the fire started on the ground level of the hotel, but that the Deputy Fire Marshall is still working to determine the cause of the fire.

While they are not yet releasing the identities of the four victims, investigators did determine that the victims were in the rooms directly above and next door to the room where the fire began.

Newport police said the majority of the motel, which opened in the 1960s, suffered major burn damage. The office was left standing.
