MARION COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

The search for a missing Portland hiker last seen ten days ago entering the Jefferson Wilderness area has been suspended.

Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers said the difficult decision came after 340 searchers spent around 5,000 hours searching for Riley Zickel, who was last seen July 27 on the Pacific Crest Trail Head.

The sheriff’s office said they had exhausted all available leads and that Zickel’s family had been made aware of the decision.

Earlier in the week a photo thought to show Zickel next to a tent was determined to be another hiker.

The main focus of the search was the heavily forested area around Mt. Jefferson, Jefferson Park and Park Butte. In addition to the area’s ridges and valleys, snow and elevation changes also made the search difficult.

"It is a very difficult decision to withdraw resources from this search. Our SAR teams and staff worked tirelessly to find Mr. Zickel,” Sheriff Myers said. “We're very grateful for the assistance provided by our public safety partners, and our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Zickel's family.”

The search tip line will remain active, and the sheriff asks anyone with information to call 503-584-7724.
