SANTA FE COUNTY, NM (KPTV) -

Family bonding is important, but a grandmother in New Mexico may not  have   taken the best approach to spending quality time with her grandson.

According to a story in the Santa Fe New Mexican, Deputy Clay Cullison pulled over a vehicle after seeing it weave in and out of traffic early Thursday.

When the deputy walked up to the 1994 Oldsmobile, he found the driver as an intoxicated 13-year-old, who had his also-intoxicated 52-year-old grandmother in the back seat.

The grandmother, identified by deputies as Sanjuana Mercado-Mendez, would not answer questions from deputies, who also noted that she stumbled walking to the patrol car, smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. Deputies also said they found two open cans of beer in the vehicle.

The grandson was also refused to take a blood test.

Mercado-Mendez, who had prior arrests for driving with a suspended or revoked license and larceny, was booked into the Santa Fe County Jail and faces charges of suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child abuse and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Despite being too young to drive, the 13-year-old grandson faces a string of charges including aggravated DWI, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving without a license, failing to maintain lanes and having an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
