WALDPORT, OR (KPTV) -

A driver rolled his pickup down an embankment into a river after swerving to miss a car pulling out of a driveway in a deadly crash on the Oregon coast, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to Highway 34 near Milepost 2 just outside Waldport at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said a 1989 Ford Ranger was heading west on the highway when the driver swerved to avoid a 2001 Saturn pulling out of a driveway.

The pickup left the roadway, went down an embankment and rolled into the Alsea River.

The driver of the pickup, 61-year-old Evert Redding of Waldport, was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

His passenger, Stanley Whittler, 59, of Spokane, Washington, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the two vehicles did not make contact. The 53-year-old driver of the Saturn is cooperating with the investigation.

Oregon State Police was assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Central Coast Fire Department, Waldport Fire Department, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Pac West Ambulance.
